Employees work in return for payment, which may be in the form of an hourly wage, by piecework or an annual salary, depending on the type of work an employee does and/or which sector she or he is working in. Employees in some fields or sectors may receive gratuities, bonus payment or stock options. In some types of employment, employees may receive benefits in addition to payment.”
Where as an entrepreneur is a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk. Yes, with risk, as an entrepreneur, you must know in details what all departments are doing especially if you are still under the Small and Medium Enterprise (SMEs) and must accept the idea that you will not receive a salary every month unlike if you are an employee.
So you are imagining yourself 5 years from now as a successful individual, but what are you, an employee or an entrepreneur?
Let’s check 3 basic difference between an employee and an entrepreneur and let’s see which one is fit for us, whatever it is, to be successful is up to us. You have the choice and the decision is solely yours.
- Employees improve their weaknesses; Entrepreneurs improve their skills.- This is why entrepreneurs tend to hone their skills by attending conferences, expos or even getting that post graduate degrees. They like to boost the strength they have already while employees are expected to be perfectionist. there is no room for mistakes. In order for the employees also to improve themselves, same as entrepreneurs, they attended any training or seminars to learn more, some push for the post graduate degrees also to have that position they are eyeing for.
- Employees practice “DIY” while entrepreneurs delegate.- Employees try to do everything themselves to deliver that project. The company is paying the skills and the know how of each employees and expecting them to deliver while entrepreneurs are always looking for ways to get things done asap.
- Employees are threatened by smarter people; entrepreneurs hire them.- We love Bill Gates, that shrewd businessman and one of the richest in this century because of him being genius and with the help of his good colleagues. He himself accepted the fact that when one is getting older, the decision and even the creativity suffers, so how to stay on top, hire these smarter kids and let them work for you. While in the corporate jungle, it’s survival of the fittest, if you are not the smartest or well connected in your department, you are stuck in the deep hole. The employees usually view those smarter people as competition, well, the bosses surely will see the difference and promote those who can deliver. But, an employee must see that, you can be successful even as a follower, check one of the richest in the Philippines corporate world with the initial of MVP and those telecommunications Presidents who appears always in broadsheets, they might made a difference, so that’s the thing every employees must do, making a difference with an entrepreneurial mindset. Own the company. Think that it’s yours.
I am so lucky to do both, an employee and as an entrepreneur. the transition from entrepreneurship to work in corporate is a struggle in the start but always thankful because it gives me an experience I will never forget. The possibilities is endless and limitless. Whether you are an employee or an entrepreneur, both have struggles and challenges.
Whatever you like to be, an entrepreneur or an employee, to be successful is up to you. It is just in a mindset. Successful people are the icing on the cake and success is inspiring and interesting to talk about but the truth is any successful individual is flesh and blood just like you, yes you, an ordinary individual. They are not born miracles but they surely do something different everyday that’s why they are successful.
