The origin of the computer is actually started in 2700-2300 BC when the Sumerian Abacus appeared. Many years later, computing took another leap when Ada Lovelace wrote the first computer algorithm in 1843, in collaboration with Charles Babbage. However, the modern era of computer began with Alan Turing’s conception of the Turing Machine. How is the journey of the computer after that? Let’s have a look at this journey.

1936: Alan Turing presented the notion of Turing machine, a universal machine which capable of computing anything, as long as it’s computable. His idea has laid a base upon the central concept of the modern computer.

1937: Iowa State University professor of physics and mathematics, J.V. Atanasoff attempted to build the first computer without gears, cams, belts, or shafts.

1939: David Packard and Bill Hewlett found Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto, California, in a garage.

1941: Atanasoff and Clifford Berry designed a computer that can solve 29 equations simultaneously. This is the first time a computer is able to store information on its main memory.

1943-1944: Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator (ENIAC) was built by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert. This device then considered as the grandfather of digital computers which fit a 20-foot by 40-foot room and has 18,000 vacuum tubes.

1947: Bell Laboratories invented the transistor. They discovered how to make an electric switch with solid materials and no need for a vacuum.

1964: Douglas Engelbart showed a prototype of the modern computer with a mouse and Graphical User Interface (GUI).

1969: A group of developers at Bell Labs produced UNIX, written in C-programming language.

1971: Alan Shugart and a team of IBM engineers invented floppy disk, allowing data to be shared among computers.

1981: The first IBM PC named “Acorn” was introduced. It uses MS-DOS as the operating system. The term ‘PC’ is also popularized around this year by Sears & Roebuck.

1985: Microsoft announced Windows as a response to Apple’s GUI. The first .com domain is also first registered this year on March 15.

1990: Tim Berners-Lee developed HyperText Markup Language (HTML).

1996: Sergey Brin and Larry Page develop Google search engine.

1999: The term Wi-Fi becomes part of the computing language.

2003: AMD’s Athlon 64, the first 64-bit processor became available to the market.

2007: iPhone brings computer function to the smartphone.

2011: Google releases the Chromebook.

2016: The first reprogrammable quantum computer was created.

2017: The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is developing a new “Molecular Informatics” program.
